Punsxutawney Phil

Punxsutawney Phil poked his head out today and didn’t see his shadow.  This is a horrible forecast for the North Central Cascades as we would love to see more snow.  This year’s snow fall has been one of the best since 1996-97 and we would love to see the winter continue so the outdoor activities in the snow can keep happening.

Punxsutawney Phil ready for more winter!

Can you believe that we still believe in what a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil tells us about the end of winter?  He’s a groundhog that lives in a box for gosh sakes!  Punxsutawney Phil has been handing out the news about the extension for 130 years.  The tradition was started by some Germans that brought it with them to Gobblers Knob in Pennsylvania and has been kept alive by the Groundhog club that started in 1887!

The skiing at Stevens Pass has been out of this world with a lot of great snow and not a lot of big crowds during the middle of the week.  The snowmobile trails around Fish Lake have been groomed and were fantastic for a good days ride.  The XC ski trails at Kahler Glen and in Plain have been groomed to a fine finish for the narrow skis to glide on and the trails around the area have been great for snowshoeing.

It is a fantastic time to avoid all the political debates, bad news stories, and legislative in-action, and get away to enjoy some downtime with your favorite person.  Cool days, snow on the ground, and a mountain of new things to try await you in the land of 300 days of sunshine a year.

Valentines Day

It is also getting to that magical card holiday that gets the males all nervous and jittery, Valentines Day.  They wander around, asking anyone that will listen, wondering if they picked the right gift, bought the correct ring, or if the father needs to be asked ahead of time just in case.  It is a great time to pop the question at a beautiful venue so you can not only enjoy the time together but also schedule your wedding date after a quick tour of the grounds and barn.

So, believe the groundhog if you want but I don’t trust some furry little animal that lives in luxury not in the woods about how long winter will last.  (Did the East Coast even have winter this year?) I would tell you, shadow or not, to not waste any more time as you only have six more weeks or so to take advantage of the great ski  and stay specials at Pine River Ranch, a scant fifteen miles from the top of Stevens Pass and located only  1.5 miles from the Fish Lake Snow Park.
