7 of the Best Places for Rock Climbing in Washington State

Rock climbing is a very popular pastime among locals and visitors in the North Cascades. Many of the cliffs and rocks are comprised of clean, solid granite. The terrain also offers a variety of climbing locations with varied difficulty. That way, you’ll be able to choose the one best suited to you. Here are some of Washington State’s best rock climbing spots!

1. Castle Rock

Castle Rock is famous for having the first-ever multi-pitch technical rock climb in Washington. It’s also the most popular Leavenworth crags climbing destination. At 400 feet high, it towers over the Wenatchee River, providing fantastic views for climbers. While are several recommended routes that you can take, the most popular are Midway (5.6) and Brass Balls (5.10 B-A).

2. Midnight Rock

With plenty of finger cracks and wide cracks, Midnight Rock is a great choice for those who are just beginning to perfect their climbing skills. Please keep in mind, however, that the crag temporarily closes seasonally from April through July due to peregrine falcons.

3. Icicle Creek Canyon

With granite crags, large boulders, and ice walls, Icicle Creek rock climbing is an experience like no other! The canyon attracts climbers from all over the nation and it’s just a short drive from Leavenworth. There are several routes to choose from here, and they vary in grade and difficulty. Some of the most popular climbs include Outer Space, Careno Crag, and The Fridge Center. No matter which route you choose, expect to see some incredible views!

4. Mad Meadows

If you’re looking for a great bouldering destination, Mad Meadows should be at the top of your list! Many of the routes here are true classics and provide challenges that will have even the most seasoned boulderers working up a sweat. Some of the most traveled routes here include Pimpsqueak and Pocket Rocket. Try them both and decide which one is your favorite!

5. Peshastin Pinnacles State Park

If you’re a more experienced climber seeking a challenge, the drive to Peshastin Pinnacles is worth it. The 34-acre state park boasts sandstone slabs that will make even talented climbers break a sweat. You’ll also want to bring your camera for this one! The jaw-dropping views of the orchards and Cascades range are postcard-worthy.

6. Leavenworth Mountain Association | Guided

Through a variety of events, volunteer opportunities, and youth climbing clubs, Leavenworth Mountain Association (LMA) hopes to strengthen the community through climbing. This is a great way to give back to the Leavenworth community while learning an exhilarating new skill.

7. Northwest Mountain School | Guided
