Everything You Need to Know About the Sound of Music in Leavenworth
Every year the Leavenworth Summer Theater puts on the famous musical, The Sound of Music, originally released as a theatrical film in 1965. It is a musical play set in 1938 about a young Austrian postulant named Maria who is studying to become a nun. As part of her training, Mother Abbess sends her to be the governess for the von Trapp Family in Austria.
Though difficult at first, she eventually wins the respect of the seven children and their father, Captain Georg, which leads to a romance between Maria and the Captain. The family faces challenges that force them to make difficult decisions and take risks to protect their freedom and safety.
The Sound of Music runs every weekend throughout July, August, and the beginning of September at the outdoor Ski Hill Amphitheater in Wenatchee National Forest. It starts at 8 pm and runs for two hours and 30 minutes, including an intermission.
The musical play is full of positivity and joy with delightful songs and messages. However, some of the themes in Act II may not be suitable for younger children. Some themes include re-enactments of Nazi soldiers looking for the von Trapp family in the abbey and have a darker theme as this story is based on actual life events of how this family escaped.
Ultimately, this triumphant story ends on a happy note. Because of its positive messaging about following your dreams and being yourself, The Sound of Music is a traditional favorite here and around the world.
