Peak Fall Foliage Season
Each fall, the Cascade Mountains put on a show of vibrant colors of epic proportions. Peak foliage season in and around Leavenworth is typically mid-to-late October. Lowland maples and valley colors reach their peak closer to the third week of the month, while higher-elevation golden larches turn bright yellow early in the month. October brings unsurpassed beauty to our mountain towns, riverbanks, and canyons.
Scenic Drives Near Leavenworth, WA
Tumwater Canyon
The drive from Pine River Ranch to Tumwater Canyon is spectacular. Make your way south on WA-207 for about 1.7 miles, then take US-2 E toward Leavenworth. As you travel along US-2, you will soon find yourself surrounded by dramatic roadside views as you enter Tumwater Canyon. The Wenatchee River runs along the highway as steep granite walls climb high above, offering a postcard-perfect setting for golden foliage on display.
Be on the lookout for scenic overlooks and pullouts, where you can stop to observe the canyon and Drury Falls. This 1,270-foot waterfall will take your breath away! Visitors can also pause to enjoy a short hike on the Tumwater Pipeline Trail, located near the mouth of the canyon closer to Leavenworth. This flat trail is easy to access and crosses a historic suspension bridge over the roaring river below.
This stretch of highway is one of the premier destinations in the Pacific Northwest for fall foliage.
Icicle Road
After a quick stop in downtown Leavenworth for a coffee or lunch, it’s time to explore Icicle Road for more spectacular fall scenery. Head to the west end of town on US-2 and turn onto Icicle Road at the roundabout. The paved road runs for several miles along the scenic Icicle Creek Valley, where it turns to gravel after about 13 miles (Icicle Forest Service 7600 Road). Expect picturesque valley vistas and sweeping mountain views just minutes from downtown.
As the road weaves along Icicle Creek, there are plenty of opportunities for picnics, photos, and even hiking, framed by the autumn trees. The Icicle Ridge Trailhead is located approximately 1.5 miles after you’ve turned onto Icicle Road.
One of the best parts about this scenic drive in Leavenworth is that you can drive as little or as much of the road as you like. Icicle Road eventually dead ends, where you will find the Blackpine and Icicle Creek Trailheads.
Lake Wenatchee Loop
For a long drive with gorgeous waterfront backdrops and the changing colors of the season, choose the scenic drive of the Lake Wenatchee Loop. This 80-mile round-trip route starts in Leavenworth and takes you through national forests for unparalleled views of fall foliage reflected on an alpine lake. However, Pine River Ranch is on the loop, so we suggest a shorter loop directly from your home base.
From our bed and breakfast, take WA-207 N toward Lake Wenatchee State Park. Enter the state park for an amazing view of the lake and the surrounding fall colors. This is also a fantastic place for a picnic or to take photos. After leaving the lake, continue north and take Chiwawa Loop Road. This will loop east, then south around the Wenatchee and Chiwawa Rivers until you come to the charming town of Plain, WA. This is a great place to stop for a bite to eat at Old Mill Cafe or to check out the area’s diverse recreation opportunities. To finish the loop, follow Chumstick Hwy/Beaver Valley Road north until you are back at WA-207.
