Leavenworth’s International Alphorn Festival

Alphorns laying on the grass on the alpine meadow

Leavenworth is a town that is built on the premise of a Bavarian village, and along with the architecture, shops, and restaurants designed to represent Bavaria, many of our local festivals offer a European slant as well. Our International Alphorn Festival, for example, is based on the one that has been held in Switzerland for well over 100 years, and if you are planning on being in Leavenworth over Memorial Day Weekend this year, it is a definite must attend. Exploring the music that has been around for multiple centuries is an experience you won’t forget, especially when you return home to Pine River Ranch after the last note has played.

Held May 24 and 25th at the Leavenworth Ski Hill & the Downtown Gazebo

The earliest reference to the alphorn dates all the way back to the 16th century, and it doesn’t appear that there have been many changes over the years. A long wood horn emits a mellow, rich, and resonant sound that will haunt your dreams in the best of ways. The two-day festival starts with an alphorn procession that leads to the Gazebo at 4:30 on the 24th and heads up the Alphorn Virtuosa concert that begins at 5 PM. Day two involves a showcase at Leavenworth Ski Hill, and a workshop recital and concert back at the gazebo. Also offering a beginner’s circle in which everyone is invited, opportunities for private lessons, and the ability to purchase horns and music, this fun festival is much loved by all who attend.

After the International Alphorn Festival

Coming home to the comfort, style, and romance of our Pine River Ranch retreats after the festival will make the perfect ending to another perfect day in Leavenworth.
